Macomb Habitat for Humanity receives $5,000 from First State Bank

St. Clair Shores, MI (June 27, 2018) – What kind of impact can safe shelter make? For many families, access to an affordable mortgage and a safe home can make a significant difference.

“We are providing a reasonable mortgage to families and giving children a backyard and opportunities to feel safe,” says Helen Hicks, president and CEO of Macomb Habitat for Humanity. “Through our programs, families develop strength, stability and self-reliance.”

First State Bank is donating $5,000 to Macomb Habitat for Humanity to enable more families to have a stable, safe and affordable place to live.

Since its introduction in Macomb County in 1993, Macomb Habitat for Humanity has built 150 homes, provided housing for 178 adults, and made a positive impact on 329 children.

“We’ve been here 25 years now, and our goal is to be ready for the next 25,” Hicks says. “We want to continue to provide community, hope and homes to those who seek a hand up, not a hand out.”

In addition to providing homes, Macomb Habitat for Humanity offers other programs for low-income people. A Brush with Kindness provides exterior home repairs for Veterans and seniors. There’s also a financial literacy program that teaches people how to manage their money more effectively and improve their credit.

“Habitat for Humanity provides hope to those who may have given up,” explains Hicks.

Hicks says donations, such as this one from First State Bank, are essential to helping the organization continue to deliver that hope to the community.

“For so many people, home ownership is a goal,” says Gene Lovell, president and CEO of First State Bank. “The work Habitat for Humanity does not only helps people achieve their dream of safe shelter through home ownership, but also builds their strength and self-reliance as they take part in the construction of that home. In celebrating good people doing great things in our communities, we are proud to recognize Macomb Habitat for Humanity.”

Founded in 1917, First State Bank observed its 100th anniversary last year. As part of its centennial celebration, the bank donated $5,000 to six Macomb County nonprofits nominated by bank employees, customers and the public.

The philanthropic outreach was so well-received—and the number of worthy organizations so many—that the community bank decided to continue the program for another year. Macomb Habitat for Humanity is the second of six $5,000 recipients in 2018.
